Roman Abramovich has splashed out on a £30million London penthouse despite the Chelsea owner’s visa issues.

The steel magnate now owns a 6,000 sq ft home close to the football club’s Stamford Bridge stadium. 

He purchased the property after delays in renewing his investor visa against a backdrop of worsening UK relations with Russia.

The Chelsea owner’s apartment is the biggest of 75 in the development and he has a team of interior designers fitting it out 

The 51-year-old is said to have given up on the application and obtained an Israeli passport that allows short trips to London despite having no visa, The Times reports.  

Father-of-seven Abramovich was the first big Russian name to withdraw his investments in Britain as tensions between President Putin and Theresa May’s government worsened.

Plans for a £1billion redevelopment of Chelsea’s ground were halted last month as the club cited the ‘current unfavourable investment climate’.

The oligarch – pictured watching Chelsea against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge – is understood to have obtained an Israeli passport 

Abramovich secured the Chelsea Waterfront property months before the visa problems started.

His design team is fitting the interior, signalling that the oligarch does not plan to quit the UK. 

The site with the tower at its centre is earmarked for completion in 2021. Abramovich’s home boasts 360 degree views of the Thames and the development includes Lots Road power station, which is being transformed into flats and businesses.  

As well as the penthouse, Abramovich forked out £85,000 each for parking spaces underground. His apartment is the biggest of 75.

The investment could dodge the capital’s property market woes, which a developer told the paper has hit the £5million to £10million properties, but not this super-prime market.    

Residential development sales head in London for Savills Ed Lewis, said: ‘Chelsea Waterfront is a couple of hundred metres too far west to be ideal for a lot of our customers and is considered Fulham rather than Chelsea by many. People are beginning to edge farther west.’

The design boom around Chelsea Harbour as well as the antique stores of New Kings Road and Lots Road are thought to have boosted popularity.  

Abramovich’s penthouse is within a short drive of the Battersea helipad. The Waterfront complex is one of many plans to regenerate west Chelsea.
